The Mamiya RZ Professional system has long been one of the favorite camera systems in the world. It is no wonder, when you look at its combination of smart, photographer friendly features, and its world-renowned optics. From it's legendary "Ideal Format", almost perfect for making 8 1/2 x 11 proportional images with virtually no image cropping or format waste, to its unique revolving back, which provides vertical or horizontal composing, the Mamiya RZ Professional system has earned the respect of professional photographers around the world.
Now with the demand from photographers to provide clients with clearly superior digital image quality, Mamiya introduces the new RZ33 digital camera kit. The RZ33 is the result of an evolution into the next generation of digital large sensor cameras. It offers advanced microprocessor technology for direct communication of all camera functions to its 33mp digital back through it's MSC (Mamiya Serial Communication) system. The result is cable-free digital operation just as smooth and trouble-free as shooting with film.
Of course the new RZ33 offers professional photographers the same exclusive features of its legendary predecessors such as:
Rack and pinion bellows focusing, with left and right course and fine focusing adjustment knobs plus a locking focus lever. The bellows focusing system provides for close-up focusing capabilities with every RZ lens, as well as infinity focusing—all without mounting-and-unmounting cumbersome adapters.
Interchangeable Mamiya world-class quality lenses, with built-in leaf shutters offer shutter speeds from 8 to 1/400sec. (plus T-setting for up 32 seconds). Electronic flash synchronization is achieved at all shutter speeds and intermediate shutter speeds can be set on the camera's speed dial setting for more critical digital exposure control.
Interchangeable Viewfinders, offer multiple viewing options. Choose from the waist-level finder (included) for low-angle versatility, or one of the eye-level prisms, such as the AE Prism Finder FE701 which provides A/S Matrix metering, 1/6 f/stops exposure accuracy plus an LED function display in the viewfinder.
Interchangeable power winder (optional) The Power Winder 2 is powered by AA batteries or an AC Adapter and adds ease of use by cocking the shutter and resetting the mirror automatically. It produces single or sequential exposures at about 1 frame per second. It can also be remote controlled with radio or infrared transmitters.
Many fail-safe system checks, warn the photographer both with visual and audible warning alert signals. And as you would expect, the new RZ33 is system compatible with all existing RZ lenses and most accessories.

RZ or RB prism finders, it assures enhanced precision focusing by magnifying the
central portion of the screen. After focusing, it can be raised to confirm
overall composition.
Featuring 5 lens elements in 2 groups, it produces a side-correct,
distortion-free image. Particularly useful for critical focusing with wide
angle, telephoto and variable soft focus lenses, as well as for copy work and
macro photography. Built-in -6 to +4 diopter correction. For AE Prism Finder and
Prism Finder Model 2.
Q:Does the RZ33 kit include a lens? A: Lenses are available separately, or you can use your existing RZ lenses.
Q:How is the RZ33’s camera body different the RZ Pro and Pro-II? A: The RZ33 kit features a new RZ camera body with integrated electronics for direct, cable-free communication with the digital back. While previous models of the RZ67 camera can work with the digital back, these older models require a special adapter that involves external cabling systems. In short, the RZ33 digital kit is almost exactly like using a RZ67 film camera: simple and hassle-free.
Q:Can I use the Mamiya RZ lenses I already own, and are they sharp enough for such high-resolution capture? A: Yes, the entire range of Mamiya RZ lenses is fully compatible with the RZ33, and are some of the sharpest lenses made—currently or historically. In fact, you may be amazed at the level of detail that your existing RZ lenses will produce with the RZ33 system.
Q:When looking through the viewfinder, how can I tell if the digital back is vertical or horizontal? A: The focusing screen of the RZ33 features an alternating horizontal/vertical indicator system, which is visible at all times.
Q:Can I use my existing RZ67 prism and power winder with the RZ33? A: Yes. The RZ33 is compatible with all RZ67 system accessories.
Q:Can I use my RB system lenses with the RZ33? A: No, only RZ system lenses.
Q:Can I use a film back on the RZ33’s camera body? A: Yes.
Q:Is there a lens conversion factor for the RZ33? A: While the RZ33 does feature a very large sensor, there is still a slight lens conversion when compared to 6x7 film. The simplest way to express this is to determine the lens you would use with 6x7 film, and then subtract 30% from that focal length. The result is the focal length to use with the RZ33. Example: If you would use a 150mm lens with 6x7 film, then the RZ33 would require a 110mm lens for the same results.
Q:My RZ67 film camera did not need to be turned off when I was done using it.
Why do I need to turn off the 'D' (digital) camera body with the RZ33 when I am done photographing? A: The RZ33 digital camera kit comes with a new version of the RZ camera body, which features integrated circuitry that "talks" internally with the digital back (thus the 'D' designation on the camera body). With this circuitry, the new RZ33 kit is continually on the ready for your next photograph. No annoying 'sleep modes' to surprise you during your sessions! When you are done photographing, you then turn the RZ camera body off, just like you would any other digital camera.
With the RZ33's new-style camera body, simply locate the rotating collar around the shutter release button, and turn it to the orange dot to turn the camera body off. Then power down the digital back. When you are ready to photograph again, turn the RZ's shutter release collar to the center (white) position to power up the RZ camera body, and then power up the digital back.
Q:Why is the RZ33's digital back set to "Mamiya DM" as the 'camera type'?
Why not "Mamiya RZ"? A: The RZ33 uses a new type of Mamiya RZ camera body (RZ Pro IID) which uses MSC (Mamiya Serial Communication) circuitry to communicate internally with the digital back, just like Mamiya's DM series of DSLRs. No annoying cables! In order to "talk the MSC language", the digital back is set to the Mamiya DM system setting. Set it and forget it!
However, the "Mamiya RZ" camera type setting remains listed as an option on the digital back, solely for users of older generations of the RZ system (original RZ, and RZ Pro II), which require special external cabling and an adapter kit. Again, the "Mamiya RZ" setting on the digital back is only for older models of the RZ system.
